What is Somatic Therapy?

Imagine not needing to find the words.

Here at Somatic Therapy Newcastle, we tune into the ways we express beyond words, as well as the physical sensations in our bodies, to identify and release emotions stored in the body. This can help you regulate your nervous system both generally and during conflict, reduce anxiety and stress, process trauma, and become more resilient when dealing with the challenges of life. ​​​

What can somatic therapy help with?
 

If you're experiencing stress or burnout, anxiety, depression, dissociation, chronic pain, or difficulty with emotional regulation, letting your body be part of the therapy process can be so helpful. There are also group therapeutic movement sessions to support connection with your body and the release of stress. You might also have goals such as motor skills, rhythm, confidence or social skills.

Meet Sarah

Somatic Therapist, Counsellor & Dance Movement Therapist

I’m a therapist based in Newcastle, Australia, with many years of experience moving somatically through emotions and finding resilience, regulation, and self-expression. I work in a trauma-informed way, so we'll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you, and we'll prioritise safety by working directly with the nervous system.

Whatever goals you bring to the session, we’ll work through together, whether it’s finding more emotional regulation, de-stressing, working on your social skills, or something completely different.

​

I’ve worked with clients in the past who have anxiety, autism, ADHD, trauma, depression, neurological conditions, and life stress, and in terms of my qualifications, I have a diploma in Dance and Movement Therapy, and I'm currently studying a Graduate Diploma of Counselling.

Designed for larger groups, these sessions invite you to explore movement to release stress, connect in with yourself, and will have a theme such gentle mindful movement, somatic meditation, or dance. Check out the events page to find out what is coming up.
